Beaulieu wins Washington Modified Tour feature, Tole, Sundstrom, Carpenter Victorious

The sun was shining bright at Grays Harbor Raceway, with a light breeze and temps in the low 70's as the Washington Modified Tour, Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks, Outlaw Tuners and Sportsman Sprints took to the 3/8 banked clay oval on Saturday night.

Outlaw Tuners

Starting off the feature events of the evening was the 15 lap Outlaw Tuner feature. Hoquiam's Cory Lash took the early lead, but quickly had tough company as Maynard Barnum of Raymond took over the top spot and pulled away from the field. Tumwater's Nathan Foster ran in the second spot, as Trevor Dugent of Tacoma and last week's winner Tyler Sundstrom of Hoquiam battled for third. The caution flag flew for Del Tucker Jr of Silverdale slowing on the backstretch, also the leader Barnum spun in turn two, giving up the lead to Foster. On the restart the battle for the lead between three drivers saw Belfair's Max Sanford take over the top spot, with Sundstrom and Foster right at his back bumper. Sundstrom took over the lead a lap later and pulled away on a long green flag run. A late race restart gave Foster and Olympia's Zachary Stallsmith a shot for the lead, but Sundstrom timed his restart just right to hold on and pick up his second win of the year. Foster, Stallsmith, Sanford and Tucker Jr rounded out the top five. Heat race winners were Sundstrom and Foster.

Sportsman Sprint Cars

Sedro Woolley's Cory Swatzina took the early lead with Burlington driver Kelsey Carpenter ran in second. The battle for third between Malachi Gemmer of Lakwood and Ferndale's Ashleigh Johnson made for two close battles on the 3/8 banked clay oval. Lap 6 saw Carpenter take the lead with a slide job in turn four on Swatzina. Carpenter quickly pulled away from the rest of the field until a late race caution from Gemmer bunched the field back up giving Swatzina another shot at taking the lead back from Carpenter. On the restart Carpenter quickly pulled away, as Swatzina saw Ashleigh Johnson take over the second spot. Carpenter picked up the win over Johnson, Swatzina, Bill Rude of Mt. Vernon and Gemmer. Heat race winner was Swatzina

Aberdeen's Zack Simpson took the early lead until disaster struck in turn two as Simpson was sideways, allowing Jason Tole of Hoquiam to take over the lead. Simpson remained in the second spot, with Jack Parshall of Hoquiam running third. Ryen Haney of Elma and Montesano driver Scott Fritts battled behind the top three until the caution flag flew for Cory Sweatman of Aberdeen stopping in turn two. On the restart Haney went from fourth to second momentarily until Parshall, and Simpson stayed right there with him, racing three wide down the front stretch. Simpson took over the the second spot, with Haney in third. Tole had no room for mistake as Simpson continued to get closer each lap. Austin Kerrigan of Aberdeen joined in on the battle, racing with Haney for third. The caution flag flew on lap 13 for Simpson as he spun to a stop in turn two. Tole once again had tough company as Haney, Fritts, Kerrigan and Sweatman stayed right there with him. At the end of the 20 lap feature, Tole picked up his first win of 2019. Kerrigan, Simpson, Fritts and Haney rounded out the top five. Heat race winners were Simpson, and Belfair's Rodger Perry, with Simpson picking up fast time.

Washington Modified Tour

31 Modifieds signed in for the Washington Modified Tour. James Wolfard of Bremerton took the early lead over Campbell River, BC's Graham Cook. The caution flag quickly flew as contact of multiple cars saw Oakville driver Brian Harding sideways on the front stretch collecting Zach Fuller of Tacoma and Mt. Vernon's Rick Smith. On the restart, Wolfard took the lead as Cook looked to the outside. Port Hardy, BC driver Lawrence O'Connor ran in third as Shelton's Devan West ran the high side looking to take over the third spot. West found the high side of the raceway to be his advantage as he quickly caught up with Cook and Wolfard. Chris Beaulieu of Campbell River, BC sat in the fourth spot, staying right with West. Lap 5 saw West take over the lead from Wolfard, continuing to run the high side. The battle for third between Beaulieu and Scott Miller of Shelton was one of the many battles to watch. Cook also joined in on that battle running the high side. A long green flag run for West saw a huge lead on the rest of the field until a lap 11 caution for Olympia's Tyson Blood and Campbell River, BC driver Lane Zerbin, as both made contact on the front stretch. West continued to lead as Beaulieu stayed close waiting for the right time to take over the top spot. Lap 15 saw Blood slow in turn two, giving Beaulieu another shot at the lead. On the restart, Beaulieu was successful on the low side, racing side by side with West down the backstretch. Beaulieu took over the lead in turn three. Beaulieu went on to win the Washington Modified Tour feature event over West, Miller, Redmond, Ore's BJ Wild from the back, and the B-Main, and Seabeck driver Kyler Moore. Heat race winners were Miller, O'Connor, Cook, and Wolfard, with Vancouver's Robert Jenner winning the B-Main.

Racing will resume next Saturday night withe the 360 Sprint Cars, and another round of the dual track bonus, as well as the Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks, and Outlaw Tuners. Gates open at 5:30PM, with racing at 7PM.
